Senior Food Safety Expert

About the role

NTU International is seeking a Senior Food Safety Expert to support an EU‑funded technical assistance project aimed at strengthening Uzbekistan’s agri‑food system. The role will focus on developing and harmonising food safety regulations, building institutional capacity and improving laboratory accreditation.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the development and implementation of a harmonised food safety regulatory framework aligned with Codex Alimentarius and EU legislation.
• Provide technical advice on food safety legislation, risk‑based inspection mechanisms and food control systems.
• Support the alignment of national standards with international benchmarks and advise on governance, enforcement and compliance.
• Strengthen laboratory systems, monitoring procedures and quality‑assurance frameworks.
• Prepare food safety assessments, regulatory analyses, operational procedures and technical guidelines.
• Develop service costing models and sustainable financing approaches for food safety services.
• Coordinate with ministries, food safety agencies, laboratories and development partners.
• Deliver workshops, technical training and capacity‑building activities.
• Contribute to monitoring, reporting and analytical outputs on reform progress.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in food safety, food science, veterinary medicine, public health, agricultural sciences or a related field.
• At least 10 years of professional experience in food safety systems, food control or agri‑food governance.
• Minimum 7 years of experience in food safety regulation, institutional strengthening or related reforms.
• Proven experience working on food safety or agricultural development projects in developing or transition economies.
• Experience with international development cooperation and donor‑funded programmes.

Required skills

• Knowledge of Codex Alimentarius standards.
• Experience with HACCP systems and risk‑based inspection mechanisms.
• Expertise in food safety regulatory frameworks and food inspection systems.
• Laboratory accreditation and food safety monitoring procedures.
