Job description

About the role

The Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine seeks a motivated doctoral researcher to lead a pioneering project in Organoid Intelligence (OI). You will develop a reservoir‑computing platform where a human brain organoid serves as a living, adaptive computing substrate.

Key responsibilities

  • Generate and maintain three‑dimensional human brain organoids from iPSC lines.
  • Design and execute high‑density multielectrode array (MEA) stimulation and recording protocols.
  • Implement closed‑loop training procedures to study activity‑dependent plasticity and functional connectivity changes.
  • Analyze extracellular network activity and map reservoir states to computational tasks using machine‑learning readout layers.
  • Collaborate across wet‑lab neurobiology, electrophysiology, and computational analysis teams.

Required profile

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in neuroscience, bioengineering, biology, biophysics or a closely related discipline.
  • Hands‑on experience with MEA technology, including electrophysiological stimulation, recording, and data analysis.
  • Strong background in neurobiology, preferably with knowledge of synaptic plasticity, LTP, and neural network dynamics.
  • Experience with human stem‑cell culture, iPSC handling, neural differentiation, and brain organoid generation is a strong asset.
  • Proficiency in scientific programming (Python or MATLAB) and interest in reservoir computing or machine‑learning concepts.

Required skills

  • Multielectrode array (MEA) technology
  • Electrophysiological stimulation and recording
  • Extracellular network activity analysis
  • Human stem‑cell culture and iPSC techniques
  • Neural differentiation and brain organoid generation
  • Python programming
  • MATLAB programming
  • Reservoir computing concepts

What we offer

  • Integration into a highly interdisciplinary, international research environment.
  • Access to state‑of‑the‑art laboratory and computational facilities.
  • Opportunities to publish in high‑impact journals and present at international conferences.
  • Competitive PhD funding and mentorship from leading experts.
