PhD in Nanoscale Electro-Optic Control of Semiconductor Quantum Systems

About the role

Join the LIST Materials Research and Technology department to develop the next generation of semiconductor quantum chips within the ERC Consolidator Project “Q‑Chip”. You will work in the Quantum Materials Group on scalable solid‑state quantum systems based on colour centres in silicon carbide.

Key responsibilities

• Integrate electrical and optical control structures on a quantum chip to increase quantum algorithm depth and reduce two‑qubit gate durations.
• Design and fabricate a quantum chip with Stark‑shift electrodes around multiple colour centres to enable parallel wavelength tuning.
• Demonstrate high‑speed electro‑optic switches on a silicon‑carbide‑strontium‑titanate hybrid platform.
• Combine nanoscale magnetic‑field tuning lines and electro‑optic techniques to create a functional silicon‑carbide quantum chip.
• Validate photon‑mediated entanglement between distant nuclear‑spin qubits on the fabricated chip.

Required profile

• MSc degree in physics, quantum technology, materials science or electrical engineering.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, with experience in publications or presentations.
• Demonstrated experience with quantum optics and/or semiconductor electronics, at least from a BSc/MSc thesis project.
