Doctoral researcher in Engineering Science

About the role

The University of Luxembourg seeks a motivated PhD candidate to join the Department of Engineering under the ArcelorMittal Chair of Steel Construction. The research focuses on non‑destructive assessment of structural steel properties to enable reuse in a circular economy, combining laboratory experiments with machine‑learning models.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct destructive and non‑destructive tests on steel specimens, including tensile, Charpy impact, hardness, and magnetic methods.
• Collect and analyse chemical composition and micro‑structural data.
• Develop and validate predictive models for steel properties using machine learning.
• Document experimental procedures and results, and contribute to scientific publications.
• Participate in teaching activities as required.

Required profile

• Diploma or Master’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Civil Structural Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
• Strong understanding of steel manufacturing processes and factors influencing mechanical properties.
• Willingness to spend more than 50% of time in the laboratory.
• Readiness to enrol as a PhD student at the University of Luxembourg.
